Armstrong Votes 2026 · Candidate

John Trainor

Background, public record, forum positions and unanswered questions for John Trainor, a 2026 Armstrong mayor candidate.

Office: Mayor

John Trainor says he previously served 18 years on Armstrong council.

His campaign is built much more explicitly around dissatisfaction with the current direction.

At the mayoral forum, Trainor called Pleasant Valley Boulevard a “fiasco” and argued the next mayor and council will have to rebuild public trust.

In his closing remarks he said the current administration has acquired what he called a “bunker mentality reputation.”

Those are Trainor’s characterizations, not mine.

But they tell voters something important about his candidacy.

He is not simply offering another experienced set of hands. He is arguing that Armstrong’s relationship with residents and businesses needs repair.

Trainor offered at least one concrete response to that problem.

He said he would institute a regular mayor’s report, involving councillors as well, so residents could better understand what City Hall was doing before decisions appeared to arrive without warning.

Trainor was also highly critical of the Rosedale intersection design.

During that answer he repeated a story he said he had heard about a ladder truck being delayed during a downtown fire because it could not navigate an intersection.

Importantly, Trainor himself said he had not confirmed the story and hoped it was wrong.

Until independently verified, it remains an unverified claim raised by a candidate, not a fact about the fire response.

Trainor also made a much larger City Hall cost claim at the forum, saying the budget had grown from roughly $2.5 million to more than $11 million.

I have not found primary City records that establish those figures.

The City’s 2021 borrowing bylaw instead lists an estimated project cost of $5.6 million and borrowing authority of up to $4 million.

Previous public office: Armstrong councillor; 18 years according to Trainor.

Record summary: Previous experience with municipal finances, infrastructure and planning.

From the forum: Made public trust a central argument and proposed regular mayor’s reports as one way of improving access to municipal information.

Another way to look at it: More communication can improve transparency. It will not eliminate disagreement over the decisions being communicated.

What I’d like to know: Beyond a mayor’s report, what specific information or decisions would Trainor make more visible than they are today?
